Master's Programs
Creative Writing
The Master's program in Creative Writing is a 33 hour two-year course of study where students can focus on poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction while still studying literature and other interesting fields across campus.
English (General)
The general degree in English is the most flexible of the degrees. It is designed for a variety of purposes, including preparing students for doctoral work or teaching licensing. The degree requires 32 hours decided largely by the student and his or her advisor.
English(Literature)
This Master's program in literature is a focused program that prepares student both for jobs and for doctoral work. This 32 hour program studies literature in depth along with research methods in the field and literary theory. Students will complete a thesis or research project in this program.
English (Rhetoric and Composition)
The Rhetoric and Composition program requires 32 hours and allows students to explore how and why communication is effective. Along with this exploration, students begin to study the teaching of rhetoric and the technology of rhetoric.
Journalism
The Master's in Journalism program requires 30 hours of coursework covering areas such as literary and and business journalism, theories of journalism, and research methods. The degree uses both theory and hands on practices to create students ready to work in journalistic fields.
Linguistics
This 36 hour Master's program focuses on understanding how language is acquired, used, and understood.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The TESOL Master's degree is a 36 hour course of study that focuses on teaching a languages to students whose first language is not English. This includes an understanding of how languages are acquired and used as well as research methods used in gaining this sort of knowledge.
TESOL and Linguistics
The TESOL and Linguistics Master's program is 45 hours and combines the interests of the separate programs. The focus is on both understanding the intricacies of language and teaching language to speakers.
PhD Programs
English with Concentration in Applied Linguistics
Students in this program must have knowledge of two languages other than English. The course of study is 90 hours and contains several general linguistics courses as well as many directed elective hours.
English with Concentration in Literature
This degree focuses on analysis and communication in preparing students to teach in a university setting or to enter into professional positions in a variety of fields. The PhD requires 90 hours and competency in one language other than English. Students in this program study explore both American and British literatures and have the opportunity to explore global literatures as well.
English with Concentration in Rhetoric and Composition
The PhD requires a 90 hour course of study and reading competency in one language other than English. The focus of the coursework is an understanding of the production, interpretation, and analysis of discourse across different times and places. Along with studying various discourses, students in this field will study pedagogy and technology related to discourse.
