Custom Presentations and Workshops

We are happy to create writing workshops and presentations for the Ball State and the Muncie community. Our most popular presentations and workshops include:

Writing Center Introduction (10-15 minutes)
In this presentation, a peer tutor will come to your class or group or, alternatively, you may bring your class or group to our center. The tutor will give out stickers with our contact information and explain the services we offer and the philosophy we operate under. If possible, the tutor will show the class or group the Writing Center website, our online scheduling system, and, time permitting, our Writing Center intro video. This is followed by a brief Q&A period.

Peer Critique Fishbowl (30-45 minutes)
Often students need help seeing what constructive writing feedback looks like. In this presentation, a peer tutor works with one or more of your students in front of the class to show what kinds of questions and feedback leads to a productive peer critique session. Instructors can ask the other students to pay attention to what seems particularly helpful and can lead a follow-up discussion to create guidelines for peer critique collaboratively.

Drop-in Tutoring/Resident Hall Programming (One to Two Hours)
We are happy, whenever possible, to provide one or more tutors for academic programming in the resident halls. Often, resident hall advisers ask for tutor for an hour or two for drop-in writing help. We've also held workshops in resident halls on revision, the writing competency exam, and research skills.

Classroom Tutor (During Class Period)
Some instructors request a tutor for their classroom to sit in with peer critique groups or work with students one to one during the class time.

Topic Specific
Over the years, we've held workshops and given presentation on a variety of other topics including the basics of academic writing, citations and academic honesty, working with sources, and revision/proofreading strategies. Please contact us if there is a specific workshop or presentation you would be interested in and we'll see how we can accommodate your needs.
